The Blitz. 70 Years on

Between the 7th and the 9th of May 1941, my home town of Kingston upon Hull was targeted by the Germans during World War Two.

My Mum was 17 at the time and i remember her telling me how scary it was and that the house she lived in with her parents had been bombed. Flattened completely, nothing left and all their possessions gone.

Today at  the Carnegie Heritage Centre in Hull they held an exhibition of various photographs of Hull during The Blitz and some war hero’s even took some of their war memorabilia to display.

It really was interesting to see a map of Hull and listed on it was the one bomb that was the cause of my mum and grandparents homelessness.

Also a fly past had been arranged of a Spitfire but unfortunately it was grounded so a Hurricane flew over Hull

this second video, the Hurricane appeared over my head and it rather wiggly as i was losing my balance which isn’t good at the best of times hehe.

    you did great with the videos, i thought they were from youtube, but you took them yourself. i am impressed. this happened 4 years before i was born, I am 66 and was born at the end of WWII so i remember all of the things in the photos because they were still around while i was growing up. thanks for the memorial of that terrible day. lest we forget

    I remember the gas masks, and the RN cigarettes my Dad used to smoke...though from later on, as I was a new-born in March, 1941...

    I remember in Belfast being told to either crawl under the table, hide under the stairs or run into the garage. I've only recently discovered how much of Belfast was bombed and firebombed. We live and learn!

    A lovely old photo of your Mum Tracey. That must be such an interesting place to look around and the videos were great as well as your photos. I remember the stories my Mum used to tell me of her days during WWII.
